Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in the middle region of the Balkan Peninsula.  To the north, west, and southwest it borders the Republic of Croatia, while to the east and south it borders Serbia and Montenegro.  Bosnia and Herzegovina has a small outlet to the sea spanning about 21 km of coastline at Neum.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is administratively divided into the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (51%) and the Republic of Srpska (49%).  The Federation of BiH is divided into 10 cantons, and the cantons are divided into municipalities.  The Republic of Srpska administratively divides into regions and then municipalities.  The territory of Brčko, which is under arbitration, belongs to neither the Federation of BiH nor the Republic of Srpska, dating back to the decision by the Arbitration Commission for Brčko placing it in the legal state of Bosnia and Herzegovena as an autonomous district.

Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of four large geographic entities.  Middle Bosnia (1,292 km2, 1,249,000 inhabitants) encompasses the mountainous space in the middle of Bosnia; it is the most diverse area of the country which from oldest times has been a crossroads for diverse influences and interests of the neighboring Peripannonian, Krš (“rocky”), and sub-Mediterranean areas.

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Upper Krš (11,842 km2, 325,000 inhabitants) encompasses the mountainous, rocky lands of western Bosnia and Herzegovina; it is the most sparsely populated and poorest part of the country - only 9% of the surface is arable land, and in the cities live less than 30% of the inhabitants.

The Mediterranean Region, also called “Lower Herzegovina” (5,399 km2, 296,000 inhabitants) is the smallest geographical entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is the area of Zagorje in the middle of the seaside.
